As a great band once said, sex is to the devil; which means that horror is chock-full of all things erotic, spooky, and erotically spooky. As a purveyor of the fine horny crafts myself, I think it’s only right that I share with you the very best in the way of sexy horror. Make this Halloween the horniest one yet!
Luciferina
This Argentinian flick has it all: sex, drugs, the devil, God, and everything in between. It follows Natalia (Sofia Del Tuffo), a nun-in-training who returns home to visit her dying father, but soon becomes caught up in a trip with her sister to a mystical shrine that apparently offers a cure to anything you need curing. I love the way Luciferina balances all the extremes of religious imagery – good and evil, the devil and God, virginity and sexual ecstasy – and manages to find a space in between all of those far-outs to tell a very interesting story of a woman’s emerging sexuality and the way that is translated through the lens of her religion. It’s sexy, scary, trippy and unsettling, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since I watched it last year.
The Lure
Mermaids? Vampires? Sexy mermaid vampire coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of 1980s Poland with a musical twist? The Lure has it all. A re-working of the Hans Christian Andersen story, The Little Mermaid, Agnieszka SmoczyĆska writes and directs this seductive, witty, and wildly inventive take on two mermaid sisters coming to land to start new lives. The Lure finds a comfortable spot between sexuality and sheer terror, the consumption of men connecting the two sides of the movie with ease. Atmospheric and committed to the striking backdrop of the 80s European music scene, The Lure is everything at once, but in the hands of a confident and skilled director, it manages to unfold this sensual, fascinating body-horror nightmare into something that really works.
Don’t Let Her In
This list simply wouldn’t be complete without a little pulp, and Don’t Let Her In is just that. A Giallo-toned, very silly erotic thriller, Don’t Let Her In sees a couple renting out their spare room to a beautiful and mysterious artist. Which is great, until it isn’t, and her intentions become a lot more clear and a lot less innocent. It’s gleefully good fun, sexy, and features great performances (especially from Lorin Doctor, as the charming-turned-chilling invader), as well as some commendably nasty practical effects, and if you’re looking for a good throwback erotic thriller, this is the movie for you.
